I should also take a moment to note the passing of Earl Scruggs, bluegrass banjo pioneer. He was famed, in and out the sometimes parochial world of bluegrass, for being indifferent to boundaries. A founder, then, but not a purist. I confess to not being much of a bluegrass fan -- I like banjos played
sans resonator, and in
the most alarming tunings possible -- but Earl Scruggs was certainly one of the most interesting people I ever shared an elevator with. RIP.
