pitchers & catchers

So while we're rifling through stacks of virtual papers trying to find the George Eliot money quote on Don Carlos the play (and like most things encountered in graduate lit classes, it may have been only a dream), this might be a good time to point out that the next free Met webcast is Don Carlo the opera, this Friday at 7pm Eastern, at the usual place.  (That's the opener with Vargas, Frittoli, Smirnova, Hvorostovsky, Furlanetto, Halfvarson, and Maazel on the mound in the pit, for anyone keeping a scorecard.)

  1. Thanks for the heads-up on this! I keep forgetting the live streaming from the Met!

    1. Hi Dr T! The Saturday radio broadcast is an established thing, Dec-April, and has been for decades, so that's probably why it gets the press.

The webstream on the Met site runs the full season, and only came along a few years ago (when they started the thing on Sirius satellite radio). But as you say, it isn't well advertised. They do one performance a week, and the night changes depending on what's up. You can find the schedule here.

I'll have to check the casting on that Alcina, I could certainly have got it wrong. I'll be working on Act 2 this weekend -- it needs a little tweaking.

    2. PS: looking at that schedule, isn't it interesting that they're streaming 3 Giulio Cesares and no Ring at all. Weird.

    3. oh thank you for the schedule, time much more agreeable than those things at 2pm, and i really enjoy radio broadcasts (though i could have listened in today... got distracted by buzz of gunman on campus!! which luckily turned out to be not true... phew). I think you put the cast list correct coz immediately when i heard Bradamante, i went searching for the cast, a very very distinctive and nice voice!
(ps- i kept it anon coz in the past when i tried to sign in blogspot ate my comment in full)

    4. Yeah, Blogspot has taken to eating comments coming in from iPads and iPhones via Safari -- Eyesometric and Earworm have also run into this annoying bug. Earworm says that switching to Chrome works. Another friend of mine couldn't leave comments from his iPad except by establishing a Google ID. Yet another, using an iPhone, found he could comment via his pre-existing Google ID, but only 50% of the time. Why does it seem Google is just doing this to mess with Mac people?
