    1. Yes, and with a cast of people I've mostly never heard, so should be interesting :)

    1. I'm not sure you're really missing anything :-/ But you may have some options if you want to hear the whole thing. Stand by.

    2. wow, she's got quite a bit of vibrato.. you know it's hard to get introduced to this via A.Harteros.. because you always hear everything else afterward! for example only now I realize how difficult to carry through this, esp. the phrasing! she's through with the first huuuuuge stretch!

    3. On the other hand, this may be the least gutless performance I've heard all week...at least AM is fully in the game, which is more than I can say for anyone in the Werther I was just listening to.

    4. On the other other hand, Giordani and his wandering pitches XP

and the prompter has a bullhorn

    5. i also noticed even A.Meade has some of her pitches wandering :-) . who was in Werther? were you aiming for the tenor or the mezzo? :-)

    6. Garanca and Beczala, comment applies to both. This follows on from the LOC's zero-chemistry Rosenkavalier earlier in the week.

Not to be a seething mass of negativity or anything :-P

    7. oh, pretty boy is now singing that role? were they both also in chicago? may be the the temperature is getting to all of them :D

    8. Given her native latitude, with Garanca it's probably more boredom than temp. And boredom is contagious. She should quit that role. Anyway, everybody's waiting for JDD's.

Can't speak to what happened in Chicago, it was Koch/Majeski/Landshamer. You all probably know them better than I do. All I can say is it's a rare day when I rip and delete.

    9. ah now i remember seeing it adver on worldconcerthall.. back to Werther, you know i heard it's a very pleasant role to sing for mezzo... but i think perhaps the difficult thing is to get the audience to feel it.. coz it's kind of moving along at a really slow pace.. and if you "see" the acting you get it more than just listening.
As for DerR, i still remembering VK with her crescent-moon bando :D

    10. I dunno, Massenet's orchestration puts the drama pretty much up in the audience's grill. The first half may go a little glacially, but by the second half Charlotte needs to pony up some dramatic commitment. If by act 3 a mezzo can't manage to sound like the seething mass of conflict the orchestra is telling us she is, it's time for that mezzo to step off...in my humble opinion LOL

Unless your director is Andrei Serban, of course, conceiving of Charlotte as 1950's suburban housewife bored soulless. If that's the case, Garanca is entirely the mezzo for the job. But that was 2005. Maybe she got stuck there.

    11. On the other hand, I came up in a mostly audio opera world, so it may just be that I gravitate to singers who are good voice actors.

    12. melikes! audio is great!
(speaking of audio, i just found out the danish radio channel did archive NS singing Mahler in case you'd like to take a detour and listen to her. I quite enjoyed Mahler (please excuse my knowledge, but it "sounds" like DerR :D :D )

    1. No, but it'll distract the GOP, and the Dems, if they're smart, will figure out way to exploit that.
